The Flaming

Thundering music flares

Electrifying the paint horse’s body

Challenging her muscles to

Churn, burn, gallop, sailing westward

Flying through sacred lands of

Natives and immigrants,

Birds, animals, plants, water, and

Mother Earth.

Initially, the woman was a passenger

Enthralled with the mare's magnificent power

Soaring over land, rivers, and sand.

Then, horse and woman began to merge

Whirling into one being,

Powerful thighs racing toward

The setting sun,

Immense strength, energy, passion.

Music reverberates, a cacophony of sound,

The woman is lying on the flushed earth

Rooted to the underworld

Deep within the forest.

Crackling, pops and swooshes

Of heat flow by and then,

She witnesses the fire

She is becoming the fire

She is the fire

Sparkling, rippling,

Prickling and plundering, gobbling up

Every morsel of dryness possible

Flaming, burning, crinkling, torching skin,

Bits of bone, wafting with the

Wondrous wind, lifting ashes aloft

Floating, swirling up, up, up

Into the atmosphere,

Moving from living body to air, rising

Higher and higher

Into the sky, red, dark heat.

Fire clearing away debris, brush,

Beasts, limbs, leaves, trunks of trees,

Crispy blood sacrifices of bones and beaks,

Claws toasted, roasted

Wiping away all sin, all ego

All of life that lived

Before The Flaming.

After the fire blew itself out,

The horse emerged, then lay down on

The charred forest floor, her journey

Complete as she pushes her foal from her womb,

Forward into life

Full of majesty and light

Unscarred by the forest's fever.

Mother licking baby, soft and sweet

The foal comes to life, breathing in

Clear air, damp smells of birth

Opening her eyes to a new world of

Peace, pain and delight

Joyfully flexing unused muscles,

And flawless, fresh skin.

With her mother’s help

She stands for the very first time.

Awakening

Lying an inch or two beneath the forest floor

Earthworms slithering all around her

Mycelium network connecting

Body to ground

Skin, head, chest, fingers and toes,

Healing her age old body.

Dirt, fertile soil, old leaves

Mushrooms growing

Destroying the old, sloughing off the skin

Separating from ego and mind

Decomposing and healing all at once.

They came one by one, first

The Mountain Lion, soft and furry

Eyes alert with her tender gaze.

Then, the Tiger Mother waltzed in to

The scene and finally, the

Jaguar Queen glided closely by

Her space right beside the woman’s mossy hair

Her body with vines, worms, earth,

And sacred plants growing as if

She were adorned on an altar.

She could have been frightened

Their fangs, long and white,

Their claws sharp for tearing flesh

But, she had no Fear

Only Wonder

One by one they laid down beside her

Rubbing up against her (likes domestic cats do)

Their fur so full of wild scents and harmonious holiness

Their heads rolled as they kept nudging

Her, the soil loosening, falling off

The vines no longer strapping her down

Letting her go

No longer is she tied down to the forest floor

Once protected and preserved by this healing growth.

One by one, they began to lick her

With their rough, tenacious tongues and sweet Love

Licking her head, her belly, her fingers

Her toes, bringing life and energy

To her bones and skin

They kept licking, grazing every

Piece of her body, every place they could touch

As if licking off her womb sac

A membrane full of amniotic fluids.

There is no end to this story

She feels them licking her still today

Sensual, delightful strokes

Urging her flesh, bones and organs

To wake up, come back to life

After so many years spent in this

Realm of forest magic, this place of

Spells, curses and wishes.

The Wild, Magnificent Mothers blessed her

With their tongues of Wisdom and Delight,

She is reborn.

The Hippopotamus

Sleek and smooth this Hippopotamus
Silky, sensual and slow
Gleaming wetness and bold
Bodied, surpassing all weight
Without burden or scorn.

Hippopotamus arrived today
Making me laugh and
Smile and sing and no longer
Suffer, for she brings hope and
Understanding, glory and glam.

What do you have to teach me, Oh Hippo?
"Slow down and don't move too fast
Got to make the morning last
Skipping down the cobblestones
Looking for fun and feeling groovy"*

That's what you have for me?
A paraphrased Simon and Garfunkel verse?
"I mean it," she added.
Sounds lovely, what else?

"Smile more and worry less
Let go of what is so bothersome
Let it pass
Even when struck by a blow
Relax, breathe and then let's go
To the water and dive in
So deep

Water cleanses the soul
And is sure to keep the
Rough edges smoother
The harsh edges softer
Relax in abundance and
Wade in with wonder."

Why, thank you Oh, Hippo
You sure know me well
Can I repay the favor of
Your visit, do tell?

Yes, you can take care of my baby
If I grow old and more weak
You can feed her and dress her
And teach her all the ways of
The Hippopotamus.

I will.

*Paraphrased from Simon and Garfunkel's lyrics: The 59th Street Bridge Song
"Slow down, you move too fast
You got to make the morning last
Just kicking down the cobblestones
Looking for fun and feeling groovy
Ba da-da da-da da-da, feeling groovy
Hello lamppost, what'cha knowing
I've come to watch your flowers growin'
Ain't you got no rhymes for me?
Doo-ait-n-doo-doo, feeling groovy
Ba da-da da-da da-da, feeling groovy
I got no deeds to do, no promises to keep
I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep
Let the morningtime drop all its petals on me
Life, I love you, all is groovy"

The Sparkling Skin of New Life

How many faces have I worn and
Shed year after year?

Now, a naked face stares at me
As if in alien form, kind and soft
Supple and sweet
Free of hard worn frowns and wrinkles

Smooth as silk and fresh, not raw
Ungrooved, this new skin
Symbolizing new life while those other faces are
At home, having done their time, served me well

Those faces grew out of need, and then wore off
Shredded by consternation and godless grief
This new skin has a sheen, hopeful
And bright, innocent and no longer
Searching for something else

The mouth so unfettered by stress
Relaxes and elongates, while inside
The tongue drops down
From the roof of my mouth and
Rests comfortably
My voice no longer needs
To shout and exclaim even though
All that boisterous activity was certainly
Worthwhile and worthy in its day

Peeking out from this tender, new skin
Calm eyes gaze and study the outside world
No longer as frightening and disturbing
Less impactful and difficult, more inviting
Little did I know that I have been protected
Throughout time by a knowledge and
A wisdom that I did not understand  -  until now

Dwelling currently in the deep expanse of the universe
All the worlds, stars, moons, and galaxies
The liquids and gases, firing up then releasing
Rising up around and through me
I am part of these tingling juices
Flowing eternally with all those I have
Known and not known

All one
All here
All now

Emerging

The Whispers got louder
The Wind paused
Along with the virus
Came an opening, a
Portal shared by those
Whose hearts, minds
And bodies yearned
For Change.

We connected together
A Community
Watching all of the
Suffering and dying out
Of the poor and oppressed
Police brutality
Patriarchal violence
Too many amazing
Souls and bodies
Being killed.

We grieved
We were angry
We were powerful
We wanted change.

We sat quietly
Waiting for instruction.
Once received, we
Recognized our roles
We knew our tasks
We wrapped up in
Sweaters and blankets
Preparing for our journey
Even during June's
Summer Solstice

Black Lives Mattering
Dismantling the Patriarchy
Welcoming the Divine Feminine
Fully into our souls.

One by one
We stepped out
Into the hot bright
Summer day
Whistling and singing
Dancing, swaying and rocking
A Chorus of Delight.

A fog set in during
The ceremony, clouding
Our eyes briefly.
When we awoke
We were slipping
And sliding all the way
Up into the sky, though
Still rooted to the earth
Soaring from our roosts

Thunder and wind
Parted the clouds
As we flowed onwards
Up, higher and higher
Lightning struck and
Behold, we emerged

Connected with the weather
At one with Mother Nature
At one with each other and
At one with The Divine Goddess

We were never alone again.

As She Lay Dying

As she lay dying
I held her hand gently.
Jerking away from me, she
Crushed my heart and soul.

Then, looking up at me

In shame, pleading with her
Eyes, she asked me to give her
Yet another chance to proclaim
Her love and loyalty. She doesn't
Mean to snap in reaction so intensely,
But it happens time after time.

Still she lay dying.

I crawled up beside her
On the bed, and held her while
She lay gasping, seeking her
Last breath.

No one could tear me away

From her cooling, dead body
For days and nights. Alas, I
Clung to her so long that our
Skin and organs merged together,
Siamese Twins.

As we entered paradise, we were

Never broken apart again.

Diving Into My Wreck (Adapted from Adrienne Rich's "Diving into the Wreck")

Diving into my wreck, swimming deep down
Eyes open, slippery skin, breathing in water,
Surviving, ecstatic and amazed,
I can breathe easily
In this vast, translucent darkness.

The Canadian goose, my female guide, whispers
Don’t crawl, don’t walk but dive, swim deeper
Flow through the water like a porpoise, a mermaid,
A slithering snake, swirling around in the abyss,
Avoiding a return to the air, to the light,
To the people.

So dark down here but I see so clearly
Beauty while gliding, free feelings,
Not lost or scared.
Floating back up seems the frightening part,
Filling me with dread.

This is a private sanctuary, safe,
Warm and cool, sweet and sour.
I see only animals, fish beings, plants.
Mud too, dark oozing mud,
Red like blood, but refreshing, bright blood
Not reeking of illness and death
But of new life, as I am
Born and born again.

Back and forth, sometimes being
Catapulted by an impulse, some urge
To enter the light of day and
All that comes with it:
Air, people, and all the messes we
Make of our lives.
Up in the air, I sometimes long to
Dive back down knowing
I will find more peace and harmony
Than up top.
I don't breathe as well up there.

Even though a shark, a dragon,
Stinging nettles and a harsh man of war
Slide by, I am encapsulated in a cocoon
Of love, of wistful patience and gentleness
(No inner critic here. She lives only above the
Dark water, where she breathes
Thick, nasty, poisonous air that focuses
Her arrows of anger and irritation,
Stay away!)

Mother Earth, Mother Spirit, Divine Feminine,
I glide through your smelly waters
Enjoying the pulsing waves and undercurrents,
The storms and the quiet calm,
And everything in between.  You hold me,
You lift me up and I can float all day long
And into the night alone, unfettered by
Talk and thinking, worrying and longing.

Not here. Here I am safe and free to be
Me, myself and no other.
My father always said, “Just be yourself,
Just be Your Self.”

Now, I am dancing and singing,
Writing, reading and creating art, and
Thoroughly enjoying myself and my life.
Joyous. Peaceful. Real.
