Occupy Cruel Competition

Hard not to hate those

White men and white women

Who believed that owning people

Was Christ-like

Difficult not to hate

Those same people who

Disavow women’s rights

Deny civil and human rights

Challenging not to hate

Those same people who

Believe the state has the right

To kill incarcerated people

Who gets to play God?
The President? No.

The Supreme Court? No.

The majority of Americans? No.

Survival of the fittest or
Natural selection?

How to square these circles

Full of contradictions, complexities

Were those people helpless, powerless

While children with parents

Who had tight but cruel control

Playing the authoritarian role?

Questing all of their lives

To find another certain leader

Who tricks them into agreement

Taking away their power instead

We want our team to win

We want to beat the competition

Working together is frowned upon

Number 1 is all that matters

Well, guess again

We will not stand for cruelty

We will not obey your laws

We want to crush those who rule

By abusing power

But, then….

Do we become just like the ones we hate

Have we fallen into hell once again

How do we conquer without becoming

The very thing we hate?

How do we work together instead?

My Mother's Psychedelic Brain

On the day of my mother’s 99th birthday
Her stroke addled brain offered her the
Gift of New Life

Half blind and mostly deaf
Human senses only partially at work
My mother entered a cathedral of
Hope and rebirth on her birthday

Having grieved the loss of her
Practical, organized personality
Highly functional human self
Her family and friend relationships
Her brain came alive again
A little differently

Released from her church lady
Prim and Proper ways
She was primed to experience
Her true God, her transformation
Seeing me, she mentioned the
Wedding she had attended
(“Not real,” my brain thought)
A reception too, and she was tired

“I married a tall young man
Named Jim, have you met him?”
She wondered aloud
I rejoiced in her newfound love
At 99, finding a divine husband!

Having never used psychedelic medicines
Her brain and the Spirits around her
Blessed her with neuroplasticity
The creation of new neuronal pathways

The beauty of transcendence
A new promise, a new life
A gift from her god
After all, isn’t Jim just another name
For God?

Does it matter?

Breathe Peace

My heart shreds
Not like a guitar shrieking
Quietly instead

How do shredded muscles heal?
Stitch the pieces together, use
Tiny threads to make whole?

The sounds of silence
When so many hearts tear
All at the same time
A backdrop of gun fire
Children's screams

Each day another shooting
Each breath another opening
Each time, we mourn, we grieve

Chronically and constantly alert
For unique and terrible tragedies
How do we live and breathe peace?

How do we share and engage
With those we love and those we don't
When each moment feels so fragile
So full of fright?

Numbly, I dive into deep waters
That restore my soul
Coming up only for precious air
Once in a great while

Why Not Connect?

Love getting to know you

Sweet attraction buzzing

Charm and delight

Why not connect?

This infatuation, this crush

This energetic touch

This word, this gesture

Swirling all around us

I love you all at first

Until that sweet, cruel critic

Creeps in questioning

Projecting, analyzing

Squeezing out the juicy nature

Of this precious fruit

The thrill is gone

Exciting time of discernment

Who are you, who am I?

Does that really matter?

Do I fit you here

Do you fit me there

Do we enjoy the same

Tastes and smells?

I imagine you to be this

You seem to become that

Different from what I thought

No intent to fool or fake

Do we betray each other

Or do we just evolve?

As you get to know me

And as I get to know you

Do we still seem like a good match?

Why not connect?

We meet, we fall in love

We join together

Seeking excitement

Union and togetherness

Why not connect?

Because

If you break my heart
I may die

Transmuting Explosion

Such fright and anxiety

Depression and anger

In people’s eyes and bodies

My own

A highly tense body

Walking around all wound up

Simmering small explosions

Like at the bottom of the ocean

Or during the rumbling of a volcano

Predicting a gigantic blast of lava

Or tsunami

Wear and tear on body

Chattering brain noises

Stress induced fantasies

Hurry up, go fast

NOW!!!

As she aged, Virginia Satir once said

"It is time to pull in a few breasts"

Or else, Crab Nebula

An Exploding Star

Let someone else take care

Of the babies

Now

Let the violence erupt all around

Without chasing or

Trying to fix all of this chaos

Let hostility slide by

Watch it, stunned but

Not as much a part of it

Like before

A bit detached

Floating sparkles

Outside of the orbiting

Gravitational pull

Magnetic embrace

Possibly ruffling feathers by

Stepping out of the rat race, having

Aggressively pushed against patriarchy and

Corrupt Authority

Cultural norms

Abuse of women and black and brown people

Damnation of both immigrants and LGBTQI communities

Genocide

A body more at ease

Healthy and strong

Spirit soaring

Fewer climactic crises

Silence increases

A peace at last

Sharper, clearer than ever before

Not as alert to danger or fear

As if cuddled up in soft embryonic fluid

Without the pressure of being born

Anytime soon

Relax here

For

Now

Time for "Lysistrata"

Why do people, especially men

Want to restrict women’s freedom

To make choices about their bodies?

When a man and a woman decide to have sex

Do they both consider what might happen

If they get pregnant?
All those one night stands
Those bar hopping hook ups

Do these people consider that

They may be making a human life?

If yes, what to do if pregnancy occurs?

Ultimately and ideally, the woman

(Along with her health provider’s input)

Makes the final decision about her health

And whether or not she will have a baby

If people seem not to understand the

Possible consequences of sexual intercourse

(That it may result in a baby even if

Birth control is used)

Then whose choice is it to decide?
Always the woman’s choice

If men could get pregnant

Would those men be OK that

A government full of female leaders

Make policies and set precedents

About whether or not the man or boy

Should have a baby?

Of course not. No doubt about that

Why do men want to quash any woman’s

Right to abort if she has given

Careful thought and consideration to the
Whole situation

Not just to when a heart starts beating

But also to her health, her relationship with

The father, her status as a provider for the child

And so much more?

Why?

Some say because if women aren’t limited

In their making such decisions

They will run wild and act out sexually

Horrors of horrors

(just like many men do)

Or, perhaps women will kill

Baby after baby, extinguishing men's wishes

To shoot their sperm all over the world

To produce many babies (for their egos or farms?)

Most men don’t even know if they

Have impregnated one night stands

Or what happened to the babies

When mothers can’t afford to continue

Medical or law school, when mothers have

To go on welfare to afford life

With a new child, when mothers may

Die because of the dangers of childbirth

Or the violence of illegal abortions

Most men aren’t monsters, or are they?

Don’t they care about their babies, their offspring?
So easy for them that women have babies

And that women have primary responsibility

For children and men can accept

Hardly any responsibility for woman or child
Monsters?  If not, what?

So easy for men to have sex and then

Never see the woman again

So easy for men to deny responsibilities

When they have sex with women

In this Western, industrialized society

How can we the people let the Supreme Court

Full of Republican jurists decide that
The states can decide whether or not

Women and girls will be mothers?

What about rape? What about incest

Oh, have those babies too?  Why?

These leaders often say they are Christian

People of faith who then

Kill some people by the death penalty

Kill other people with policies and procedures

That are antiquated and unjust

Unfair for All people

Why are the prisons so full of people of color?

Not because they are the only ones who commit crimes

Not at all

Is this a lack of empathy on men’s parts?
Is this narcissism or selfishness?

Is this not caring about what happens after sex?

Are men really that galling of a gender?

(Some of my best friends and family are men)

Men love to be adored, love to be loved on

But some want to control their women

Possess them, keep them in chains

So maybe they can feel like BIG men

Powerful and mighty

Just like God and the church where
God’s in charge and the people

Should do God’s bidding

But, isn’t that confusing the divine

With the human? And, God with a man?

Whose fault is this Supreme Court decision

That robs women from making free choices about

Their bodies? Whose fault indeed?

All of us may be complicit, actually

Let me count the ways and the people

Responsible for how we have arrived at this

Place so many years after freedoms were granted

We have gone back to the dark ages

Why?

What do we do about this now?

How do we make changes that are healthy?
Who has the voice or votes that decide?

Now women may return to coat hangers

And back alley abortions, resulting in

Infections, death and/or sick babies

Will some men feel relieved, believing

These women deserve such horrible consequences

For being sexual beings

(Just being like the men who had sex with them)

No matter, they may say, because men don’t have to

Deal with those women, those deaths, those babies

Are women willing to withhold sex from men

So that they can exert power over their own bodies?

How will men feel about that?
Oh, sure, some may turn to female sex workers

But what if these sex workers also deny them?

Will they turn to male sex workers then?

(And don't say gay)

Or, figure out that they do depend on women

Like their own mothers who raised them?

If they cannot grow up and accept

The responsibilities of being good fathers, then

They don’t get to choose

They need to lose that option

Or else

We shall bring back the ancient Greek comedy

Lysistrata, a play by Aristophanes, where

Women withhold sex to end war

Is that what men want?
Will women be willing to go on strike?

Apocalypse Now?

I look forward to new experiences

Though frightened, I am curious

Maybe even excited about what comes next

Not a catastrophe but revelation

Glad that some of our structures

Dissolve into fire or ice

Sad about melting Mother Earth

Our Source, our Love

I rejoice when I realize that

I am the cause of my own suffering

Protecting myself from the outside world

Finding deep peace in knowing

No need to judge so very harshly

No need to embody stresses

That keep adrenaline and anxiety

Pumping

A cocoon, staying away

From the angry ones

The hurt ones

I ask for forgiveness

Listening deeply to my best instincts

To wonder, to explore before

I break apart, blow up

Or shatter

This new vision includes deep understanding

A dream about my mattering but

Not as much as I formerly believed

Not having that much power

But power enough to relax and rest

Stop fighting the good fight

Developing more subtle ways

To bring change to the world

By changing myself

That’s all I can do

Believing the Great Spirit Mother

Will care for others, not just my job

We move along the paths of

Destruction and joy

Out of the darkness comes light

After we wade inside the black cave

Without knowing what we will find

Accepting what is there

Hoping to embrace all parts of us

So many particles from ugly to beautiful

The apocalypse has already come

We are now walking through hell on earth

We cover ourselves with a cloak of hope

And community so that we can all heal

So that we can all grow

And bloom

Season by season

Day be day
